Is there a Difference Between Weight Lifting and Body Building?

by Dan Farrell

Yes. Just ask that question to a "bodybuilder" or a "weightlifter" and you should get a load of an answer. While it is very true that bodybuilders and weightlifters will train with weights - they are two very distinct athletic sports, with two varying and distinct achievable goals, specifically when we are referring to them on the professional or semi-professional level.

A professional or competitive bodybuilder is chiefly concerned with a sculpted look. Many are working for an overall body image that shows off a cut and hard and well defined muscle mass to its greatest visual look. A weightlifter on the other hand is primarily concerned the strength in the areas of their competition. In other words the muscles that are most important during a Snatch or Deadlift competition. Specifically the competitive bodybuilder, winning a competition has nothing to do with your strength or how much you can lift, but your muscular appearance. All the muscles on a competitive bodybuilder should appear symmetrical, and proportional, so they must work out all muscle groups of the body equally.

Now if you are not hoping on competing in either athletic sport the distinction may not be that important to you. However, the discussion spells out how significant it is to clearly realizeyour goals as to the purpose you are lifting weights. Are you looking to improve your physique? Enhance your strength and stamina? Or maybe a little of both? If you are not a competitor, it matters less what you identify with, then what you wish to accomplish with weightlifting. When you determine what you wish to get out of a weightlifting activity you can then craft a specific series of routines, exercises and lifestyle changes to realize those goals. Bodybuilding
