Head Lice Treatment: Which Methods Work?

by jason ciment

Nearly everyone fears the very thought of getting head lice. If chills run down your back when someone you know gets lice, getting them yourself can be downright terrifying. If this happens to you, however, you aren't alone. Head lice treatment can, in fact, be very simple. There are several different methods that will rid you of head lice for good.

Determining if you actually have hair lice is important to determine before assuming an itchy scalp or dandruff is actually lice. If it is, the itchiness could be from the lice biting the scalp or the eggs are similar in looks to the dandruff.

Once you've decided you truly do have lice, you need to pick a head lice treatment. Many different treatments exist; however, not all of them are thoroughly tested and/or scientifically proven. For best results, you are better off sticking to the tried-and-true methods. Luckily, plenty exist.

One method of head lice treatment is simply to shave the entire head. Once all your hair is gone, the lice have nothing to cling to and will be less inclined to remain on your scalp. Of course, a shaved head might not appeal to your personal style. If this is the case, fret not. There are less drastic solutions.

Do you have lice problems in your hair? Worry no more. Now you can use special lice comb for removing lice. These lice comb can be used to remove the adult lice as well as those tiny young lice. They can even remove the nits. Just oil the comb before combing your hair for smooth combing and the lice is all history.

A chemical solution can also be used to kill lice and nits. An effective over-the-counter head lice treatment is permethrin, which is available in the form of lotions or shampoos. If those treatments are not strong enough, a doctor can prescribe stronger medication. For very young children, however, chemical treatments are not recommended.

Using a good head lice treatment should get rid of the lice within a week. However, it is still a good idea to check for any reaming lice. Getting head lice is not horrible, as long as you know how to get rid of lice.

How to get rid of lice: First, determine if you have hair lice. Signs include itchy scalp, nits, or eggs. Next, choose a treatment. One (drastic) option is to shave your head. Another head lice treatment is to comb your hair with a head lice comb. Make sure to oil the comb before using. Finally, a chemical treatment can be used, and if that is not enough, a doctor can prescribe something stronger. This final treatment is not recommended for children. Effective treatments should take no longer than about two weeks.
