Keloid Treatment Alternatives

by Kathleen LeRoi

Keloid removal can be a long road especially if these ugly scars return. If they are limiting your mobility or hindering your self-esteem, keloid treatment is a necessity. These types of scars can be both itchy and sore to the touch. Keloids don't just form from a major injury but something as small as a nick, insect bite or even acne.

Keloid scar tissue develops when the body continues to produce tough, fibrous protein (known as collagen) after a wound has healed. They are different from other scars in that they continue to grow beyond the limits of the wound and above the surface of the skin.

Keloid Treatment Alternatives

Keloid scar removal can be approached in a number of different ways, but they are two general procedures for treatment. One option is to use a cream or gel topically. Another method is using the surgery route which could also include laser surgery. Keep in mind that people having one keloid scar are prone to this condition and should consult an experienced doctor or surgeon.

Surgery

Keloid surgery is always more involved and risky and should only be considered for more severe cases. There's always some uncertainty with the success surgery but with keloids they have the tendency of growing back. Many times steroid injections, pressure bandages or radiation are used to prevent the occurrence of a new keloid from forming. Surgery can be quite expensive compared to other options.

Scars Cream or Topical Products

Topical treatments that contain silicone have been found to be effective in scar removal. Silcone sheets should be applied over the scar. It can take weeks or months to see the desired results, which in the end can be quite expensive. Some people complain that the sheeting does not stay in place, which diminishes its effectiveness.

The next option is a scar removal gel or cream, which usually contains some form of silicone. The application provides a protective barrier over the scar so the ingredients are in constant contact with the scar but allows flexibility and movement.

Topical products include creams, gels and silicone sheeting do require a certain amount of patience to see improvements.

Natural Keloid Scar Removal

Keloid scar removal doesn't have to limited to chemical based topical products because now there are natural scars creams too. Scientists have found that the serum from snails contains enzymes that regulate skin growth by dissolving scar tissue and help in the process of rebuilding new collagen and elastin into the skin. Also, it can stop future keloid scars, reduce the size of current keloids and halt itching and soreness.

Bioskinrepair is one keloid treatment that uses this natural ingredient. Keloid removal is difficult because the keloid scar tissue is different in many ways from regular scars, but thanks to the simple snail their removal doesn't have to be chore.
