Organic Skin Care Products for Aging Skin: Don't forget to read the Labels

by Aileen Fitzharris

The word organic can mean many things to different people. In the food industry, it refers to products that do not contain pesticides or growth hormones. However, to someone in the skin care industry, it means products that do not contain artificial ingredients, petroleum-based ingredients, or other unsafe ingredients. Nevertheless, some skin care products that are marketed as natural take an even more global scope to the meaning of the word and use it when referring to products that aren't so natural. Their logical rides on the fact that petroleum isn't a synthetically produced product and doesn't take into consideration the fact that it is more detrimental than helpful. So how can you protect yourself from mislabeled products? Simply make it a habit to read the labels before purchasing the product.

Anti Aging Ingredients to Avoid

Anti aging products were made to help fight off the aging process, however, the following ingredients can actually speed up skin aging and lead to wrinkles, dull skin and other skin problems. Make sure to check the labels before you purchase any organic skin care product.

*Synthetic Colors

Synthetic colors contain heavy metal salts derived from coal tar. These components have proven to cause free radicals and quickly lead to eye wrinkles and dull skin. If you want an effective anti wrinkle cream that can help you prevent these problems, make sure that the products you use don't contain FD&C or D&C colors.

*Petrochemicals

This group of ingredients is derived from crude oil. Petrochemicals coat your skin and make it impossible for your body to eliminate toxins. They can lead to dull skin, and cause allergies and clogged pores.

Avoid anti aging creams that contain mineral oil, paraffin and petrolatum. This is especially true for people with oily or combination skin.

*Sulfates

These components are usually found in soaps, detergents and cleansers. If the product you are about to buy contains sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate, then it contains sulfates. Sulfates are known to dry out the skin and cause rashes.

*Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Quats)

Quats are used in conditioning products, but be careful because they have also been linked to antibiotic resistance. Try and avoid using products that contain benzalkonium chloride, cetrimonium chloride and cetrimonium bromide, among others.

*Alcohol

If you find alcohol in your wrinkle treatment then discard it immediately. Alcohol is known to dehydrate the skin and promote the development of wrinkles, irritation, and skin rashes. As a matter of fact, there are only 2 types of alcohol that aren't detrimental to your skin, and these are: stearyl alcohol and cetearyl alcohol.

These are only a few of the ingredients you should avoid if you want to get a safe product. By doing a bit more research, you can find the best wrinkle creams out there.

However, not everyone has time to spare, so we've done some of the research for you.
